Setting goals is an age-old practice for improving oneself, helping us take ideas and dreams into physical reality. But achieving our goals can require us to change habits and overcome deeply-rooted limiting beliefs — something much easier said than done, as those beliefs tie into our identity: our conscious and subconscious self-image. Plus, setting goals doesn’t mean we suddenly have the skills to achieve them, or even know what those skills are. Wouldn’t it be nice to have professional support every step along the way?

While life– and executive coaches are increasingly available to help us invest in our personal development, not everyone has access to the coaching they need, for reasons that may include location, money, specialization, or time.

Coaching is an invaluable boon to your life. I’ve worked with several coaches, and am training in the methodology myself because of how valuable those skills are. Still, I don’t think we need a coach for every goal we set for ourselves; there is a lot we are capable of achieving with just the right motivation, structure, and tools. And sometimes, all it takes is conscious intent.

My greatest investment was in my relationship with myself

All the best times in my life happened when I was heavily invested in either my relationship with a partner at the time, or in myself and striving to: learn new skills, better understand my authentic self, and set goals — and achieving them.

But the most life-changing experience has been when I cultivated a conscious relationship with myself as if I were my own soulmate, seeing myself as a partner I wanted to blossom and succeed in life with. Constantly learning new professional and emotional intelligence skills, identifying limiting beliefs and the stories I told myself that kept those blockers in place, and working on ways to overcome them and grow as a person.
